Brain Food – Energy & Anti-inflammatory Drink

There are a whole host of diseases from auto-immune to arthritis that are increasingly being linked to inflammation. And there is more and more in the news about the cognitive benefits of turmeric on Alzheimer patients and the anti-inflamatory effects of ginger and cinnamon.   

Here’s a beverage I drink with those spices.  It’s quite good.

 (Dr Sanjay Gupta drinks this every evening as a tea for calming.)

1 cup almond milk – either vanilla or chocolate 

1/2 tsp turmeric

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp ginger

1 tsp honey to drizzle over top (No need for honey if using chocolate)

Heat the almond milk in microwave. Stir in spices.  Drizzle honey on top. (You can add a packet of Stevia to the mix if you like your drinks sweet)  

I buy bulk turmeric, cinnamon and ginger in the market and mix up a batch to have on hand.  

With the mixture I add 1-3/4 tsp of mixed spices to one cup of almond milk.

  1. I drink turmeric tea every day. I put 1 heaping teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup, add a pinch of black pepper, add some olive oil (or coconut oil). Stir it until the mixture looks like a paste. Then add hot water, and stir. To help body absorption of the turmeric, you have to add some black pepper and use heat, such as hot water.
    You can also add turmeric powder and black pepper to the water when you cook rice. The heat is from the rice being cooked. You can also add turmeric powder when you stir fry. Remember to put black pepper and some oil, and heat.
    I buy my turmeric powder in an Indian store. Their product is pure. The price is reasonable.

      Thanks for the tea and rice recipe. I’ll absolutely try the turmeric and rice. I don’t know why Dr Gupta doesn’t add black pepper ad I too heard that pepper helps boost the power of the species. You have answered Sharon’s question about the heating part. Comments like yours are really informative and add immeasurably to the post. THANK YOU!

  2. In the Chunese culture, turmeric and ginger tea is to be drank in the morning and not in the evening. I wonder why Dr Gupta does not add black pepper to his recipe.

  3. If you heat this, does it sorta taste like hot chocolate when the almond milk is chocolate flavored? I’m trying to figure out why you heat this. Does heating the mix make it blend better? I think I’d prefer it cold.

      Read Linda T.s comment and her information on heating the spices.
      I would think that if you drank it cold it would still be of benefit. Heating it also helps the spices dissolve. BUT . . . if you heat it first and then added ice or put it in the refrigerator to cool I think that would work too.

      Using chocolate milk is deeeeeelicious and does taste like spiced-up hot chocolate. I think one could use regular milk instead of almond milk too. The almond milk is better if you’re lactose intolerant or are on a non-dairy diet.

  4. Oh yum yum how delish!!!! Just went for very interesting frequency treatment for inflammation in the body ~ what all we humans have in varying degrees and different organs. So hear hear to a healthy inflammation reducing drink! (I would heat it on low on the stove though, rather than using a microwave which might reduce the effectiveness or at the least have its own energy/frequency. I can’t quote them ( but they are around) … opinion/research on the dangers of microwaving good. Makes sense to me and that’s an easy risk to avoid healthwise I think.
    Interesting post ~ as always . Love your blog posts and am always eager to open and read them. Always so chock full of interesting stuff.

  5. If you like to drink it cold, heat it first, then let it cool, then put it in the fridge. I heard and read that with the turmeric powder, you need 3 important ingredients —- black pepper, oil, and heat.

  6. According to the instruction, black pepper, olive oil or coconut oil and hot water can extract the nutrients from the turmeric powder.
